We took in some last sights around Tumut before heading on the Snowy Mountains Highway towards the Mount Kosciuszko National Park and spectacular alpine scenery. We made a number of stops along the way, the first being Blowering Dam. The next detour off the highway was through Talbingo to the Tumut 3 Power Station - our first hydro electric plant. At the moment, there aren't any tours inside the plant, but it is still worth the detour to view the scale of the plant.
The staff at the Tumut Vistor Centre recommended the bistro at Cabramurra as a great lunch stop. It was built for Hydro Scheme workers, but all are welcome. The menu reads like a standard cafe menu, however, the servings are plentiful, the prices incredibly reasonable, the service friendly and the food good. The drive up to the town (the highest in Australia) winds through wild and varied alpine scenery and the road is paved the whole way. On the way back to the highway, we drove into Mt Selwyn ski fields (just because we could and we were curious).
We had planned for no more stops today, but noted where the turn offs were to Yarrangobilly Caves and the Kiandra Heritage Trail which we hope to backtrack and explore over the next couple of days.
Early morning mist on the Tumut River ...
